Grant developed a wooden tee that inspired the United States Golf Association to credit Grant with the invention of the golf tee. In the United States, Boston dentist George F. Matthews brought out his Vector, a metal spike topped with a rubber cup designed to cradle the ball. In 1892, Percy Ellis of Surrey, England, developed an iron tee topped by rubber pegs or a rubber ring. The plate rested on the ground and lacked any way to cradle the ball, which tended to blow off the tee frequently in the Scottish winds. In 1889, William Bloxsom and Arthur Douglas invented a small rubber plate with upright prongs or a hollow cylinder. Like the game itself, the first efforts to create artificial golf tees rose from the mists of Scotland. Since every member of a foursome needing to build a tiny sandcastle was messy, and not conducive to a speedy pace of play, a new approach was needed. After building a small pile, they’d rest their ball on the pile, wipe their hands, and tee off.
Golf courses would have boxes of wet sand, or players would wet their hands and dig into a box filled with dry sand.
Who invented golf driver#
While golf tees don’t get the same attention as highly engineered carbon-fiber iron shafts or titanium driver heads, raising the ball to start a hole has been an important part of the game since its invention in the 1500s.įor golf’s first 300-odd years, players teed off either by dragging their clubs on the ground to create a small dirt pile, or by building a small sand pile to elevate their ball.
Normal people tune in to a golf tournament and ask themselves basic questions such as ‘who is leading’ or how their favorite player is doing.
